Welcome to our blog
I joined the DNR Youth Conservation Council (YCC) along with seventeen other kids from around Michigan. We met each other for the first time at a weekend retreat at the Kettunen Center in Tuskin, Michigan. The goal given to us is to help increase awareness and engagement among youth to the state’s outdoor activities and conservation efforts. During this weekend, we generated lots of ideas and had fun getting to know each other and enjoying the outdoors.
I chose to be a part of this group because of my growing passion for the environment. I have spent the last four years as a volunteer with the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge. I fell in love with the environment while helping to transform a brownfield into a refuge gateway where people can visit and enjoy the outdoors. I have worked at the refuge in a variety of capacities including educating kids, planting trees and invasive species removal.
As a starting point, we hope as a group, that this blog will be a place for kids to express their thoughts and experiences about nature, the environment, conservation and outdoor recreation.
Also, please feel free to ask us any questions. We would love to hear your thoughts!
